What are some examples of collocations? A group of words that are expected to be together can also be defined as collocations. Some more examples of collocations are to do homework, to make the bed, to take a risk, etc. Some examples for the same with ask include ask a favour, ask a question, ask about, ask card, ask over etc. Basic Collocations are combinations of easy words that are often used together. Many of the most common basic collocations include a verb such as make, do and have, together with a particular noun or noun phrase. A collocation is a group of words that usually go together. For example, in English, we usually say ‘heavy rain’. It’s correct grammatically to say ‘strong rain’ or ‘big rain’, but both of these sound completely strange. A native English speaker would never say ‘big rain’. Collocations are very, very important. Some with tell include tell a lie, tell a story, tell the time etc. The same with say include say so, say no more, say goodbye etc.
