The coal allocation scam refers to a major political scandal concerning the Indian government’s allocation of the nation’s coal deposits to PSEs and private companies. A draft from comptroller and auditor general of India’s office, accusing the government of India resulted in a central bureau of investigation into the veracity of the allegation. The CAG alleges that the government had refused to allocate coal blocks by a process of competitive bidding, even though it had the authority to do that. This, allegedly, caused a situation where both public sector enterprises and private firms paid less than they might have otherwise. The issue had received massive media attention and caused a public outrage. This scandal is also known by a pun “Coalgate” named after the popular brand of toothpaste.
