Chattambi Swami was a great social reformer and yogi. He had a distinct personality. His parents named him Ayyappan, but those close to him referred to him as 'Kunjan.' Both names were ideal for his personality. He studied the Vedas and yogic texts with a childlike curiosity and openness of mind, both of which he was born with. He was also known as 'Chattambi,' which means a leader or reformer, which matched his fantastic personality. While studying at the school run by the famous scholar Raman Pillai, he was given the name 'Chattambi' as an honour for his leadership qualities. He made revolutionary attempts to explain Vedic theories to ordinary people in simple terms, freeing them from the darkness of ignorance. Reading his books is like diving deep into the ocean of Shrutis, which present the eternal truths of the Upanishads in an easy-to-understand language. It was through his efforts that ordinary people of all denominations were able to become acquainted with Adishankara's Advaita philosophy.
ചട്ടമ്പിസ്വാമികൾ അഥവാ പരമഭട്ടാരക വിദ്യാധിരാജ ചട്ടമ്പിസ്വാമികൾ (ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 25, 1853 - മേയ് 5, 1924) കേരളത്തിന്റെ സാമൂഹിക നവോത്ഥാനത്തിൽ നിർണ്ണായക പങ്കുവഹിച്ച ആത്മീയാചാര്യനായിരുന്നു. തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തുള്ള കൊല്ലൂർ എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ 'ഉള്ളൂർക്കോട് വീട്" എന്ന ഒരു ദരിദ്ര നായർ കുടുംബത്തിൽ 1853 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 25നാണ് സ്വാമികൾ ജനിച്ചത്. അച്ഛൻ താമരശേരി വാസുദേവ ശർമ്മ, അമ്മ നങ്കാദേവി . അയ്യപ്പൻ എന്നായിരുന്നു യഥാർത്ഥ പേരെങ്കിലും കുഞ്ഞനെന്ന ഓമനപ്പേരിലാണ് കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. ഹിന്ദുമതത്തിലെ ബ്രാഹ്മണാധിപത്യത്തെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്താണ് അദ്ദേഹം പൊതുരംഗത്തു ശ്രദ്ധേയനായത്. കൂടാതെ ക്രിസ്തുമതഛേദനം എന്ന പുസ്തകവും ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ ശ്രദ്ധേയനാക്കി. വർണ്ണാശ്രമ വ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ നിഷേധം, സ്ത്രീപുരുഷ സമത്വവാദം, സാർവത്രിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിനുള്ള ആഹ്വാനം എന്നിങ്ങനെ അതുവരെ കേരളീയ സമൂഹം ചർച്ച ചെയ്യാത്ത വിഷയങ്ങൾ ചട്ടമ്പിസ്വാമികൾ പൊതുവേദികളിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. മതപുരാണങ്ങളെയും ആചാരങ്ങളെയും യുക്തിയുടെ വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ സമീപിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനശൈലി.
