Cell culture is the process of growing cells in controlled environments, usually away from their native habitat. After the cells of interest have been removed from living tissue, they can then be kept in a controlled environment. These parameters differ for each kind of cell, but typically include a vessel or medium that is appropriate, provides the necessary nutrients (amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals), growth factors, hormones, and gases (CO2, O2), and controls the physio-chemical environment (pH buffer, osmotic pressure, temperature). While some cells can grow free-floating in a culture media, the majority of cells need a surface or an artificial substrate to develop on. Most cell lifespans are genetically predetermined.
