A cell is a membrane-bound structure that occurs as a functional independent unit of life or as the structural or fundamental unit in a biological tissue specialized to perform a particular function in multicellular organisms A cell is a mass of cytoplasm that is bound externally by a cell membrane. Usually microscopic in size, cells are the smallest structural units of living matter and compose all living things. Most cells have one or more nuclei and other organelles that carry out a variety of tasks. Cell culture refers to the removal of cells from an animal or plant and the cells are grown under controlled conditions, generally outside their natural environment. After the cells of interest have been isolated from living tissue, they can subsequently be maintained under carefully controlled conditions. At this stage, the cells have to be sub -cultured by transferring them to a new vessel with fresh growth medium to provide more room for continued growth.
