The exact cause of social phobia is unknown. However, current research supports the idea that it is caused by a combination of environmental factors and genetics. Negative experiences also may contribute to this disorder, including: bullying. Symptoms and signs of social anxiety are triggered by social situations, especially around unfamiliar people and settings. The symptoms of the same are physical and emotional. These symptoms may come and go or change over time. Facing stress or demands may cause them to flare up. Social anxiety disorder usually comes on around 13 years of age. Shy kids are also more likely to become socially anxious adults, as are children with overbearing or controlling parents. You are more likely to develop social anxiety disorder if your biological parents or siblings have the condition. Negative experiences. Children who experience teasing, bullying, rejection, ridicule or humiliation may be more prone to social anxiety disorder.
