Capability maturity model (CMM), which is a framework that is used to analyze the approach and techniques followed by any organization to develop software products, was developed by Software Engineering Institute in 1987. CMM basically refers to the ascending series of levels of a software development organization. Other than that CMM provides guidelines to accentuate the maturity of the development process of the software products. CMM is based on profound feedback and development practices adopted by the most successful organizations worldwide. This model proposes a strategy for software process improvement which should be followed by progressing through 5 different levels viz. Initial level, Repeatable level, Defined level, Managed level and Optimized level. Each level of maturity shows a process capability level. All the levels except level-1 are considered as Key Process Areas. It encourages the achievement of a higher maturity level in some cases in order to improve overall software quality.
