Buddhism is one of the world's largest religions, having begun in India 2,500 years ago. Buddhists believe that the human existence is one of suffering and that the only way to obtain enlightenment, or nirvana, is via meditation, spiritual and physical effort, and good behaviour. Buddhists believe that human life is a cycle of sorrow and rebirth, but that if enlightenment (nirvana) is attained, this cycle can be broken forever. Siddhartha Gautama was the first person to achieve this condition of enlightenment, and he was and still is known as the Buddha.
ബുദ്ധമതം ബുദ്ധമതത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാപകൻ ശ്രീബുദ്ധനാണ് . എല്ലാ തത്വചിന്തകരിലും വച്ച് മഹാനായ തത്വ ചിന്തകനാണു ശ്രീബുദ്ധൻ. ബുദ്ധന്റെ ജീവിത കാലഘട്ടം 566 - 486 ബി സി ആണ്. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ഉടലെടുത്ത ബുദ്ധമതം നിരവധി രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കും വ്യാപിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. എല്ലാ ദുഖത്തിനും കാരണം തൃഷ്ണയാണെന്നു ബുദ്ധമതം പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
