Karnataka has been a fertile ground for many religions to grow and thrive. Buddhism too has its history and roots in the state. Buddhism thrived in parts of North Karnataka under the rule of Mauryan Empire. Srishaila was once a home for buddhism, today the Shaivism thrives there. This could explain the setting up of tibetan refugee settlements in Karnataka in Bailakuppe near Mysuru and Mundgod in Uttara Kannada district. Tibetans follow buddhism and these places have emerged as sacred and important places for this community. Bailakuppe is the second largest Tibetan settlement outside Tibet. Here is a glimpse of the trajectory of Buddhism in Karnataka under various kingdoms.
ಭಾರತ ದೇಶದಂತೆ, ಅನೇಕ ಧರ್ಮಗಳು ಬೆಳೆಯಲು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕವು ಕೂಡ ಫಲವತ್ತಾದ ನೆಲವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಬೌದ್ಧ ಧರ್ಮದ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕವು ಮುಕ್ತ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ದಾರಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು. ಮೌರ್ಯರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೌದ್ಧ ಧರ್ಮ ಬಹು ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಾಗಿತ್ತು. . ಮುಂದಿನ ಹಲವು ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳು ಇದನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದವು. ಇಂದು ಶೈವ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮನೆಯಾಗಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀಶೈಲವು ಒಂದುಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೌದ್ಧ ಧರ್ಮದ ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಟಿಬೆಟನ್ ನಿರಾಶ್ರಿತರಿಗೆ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಬೈಲಕುಪ್ಪೆ ಹಾಗು ಮೊಂಗೋಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಅವಕಾಶ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಇಡೀ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲೇ (ಟಿಬೆಟ್ನ ಹೊರಗೆ) ಬೌದ್ಧ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಾಗಿವೆ.
