Brief history of Sharanas in Karnataka

Bhakti movement in India started as a rebellion against strong ritualistic and casteist practices of that time. It started around 7th or 8th century. In Karnataka the movement gave birth to Sharanas in the 12th century. The main principles of this movement were that there is one god and all humans are equal and they shunned religious and superstitious practices. Basavanna was the main proponent of this movement. It also gave birth to vachana sahithya, a form of literature that spoke to spiritual and social matters of the time challenging the Sanskrit influence of that time. Here is a brief history and its current standing in the state.
ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು ೭ ಹಾಗು ೮ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾತೀಯತೆಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಚಳುವಳಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡಿತು. ೧೨ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ, ಇದೇ ಚಳುವಳಿಯು, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಶರಣರ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ನಾಂದಿಯಾಯಿತು. ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು ಇದರ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪ್ರವರ್ತಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಶರಣರ ಮುಖ್ಯ ತತ್ವಗಳೆಂದರೆ - ದೇವರೊಬ್ಬನೇ, ಮನುಷ್ಯರಲ್ಲೆರೂ ಒಂದೇ, ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೇಲು ಕೀಳು ಎನ್ನುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಹಾಗು ಮೂಢನಂಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ತ್ಯಜಿಸುವುದು. ಈ ಚಳುವಳಿ ವಚನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕಿತು. ವಚನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವು ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಭಾಷೆಗಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಬಂಡಾಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು ಹಾಗು ಆಗಿನ ಕಾಲದ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಹಾಗು ಸಾಮಜಿಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸಿತ್ತು.
