Bone Marrow Transplant

Presentations | English

BMT? Any idea what it represents? Bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a special therapy for patients with certain cancers or other diseases. A bone marrow transplant involves taking cells that are normally found in the bone marrow (stem cells), filtering those cells, and giving them back either to the donor (patient) or another person. Understandably, transplants for patients with nonmalignant diseases have a much better success rate with 70% to 90 % survival with a matched sibling donor and 36% to 65% with unrelated donors. A stem cell transplant uses stem cells from your bloodstream, or a donor's bloodstream, whereas a bone marrow transplant uses stem cells from your bone marrow or a donor's bone marrow. For bone marrow transplantation, the blood group of the donor is not important. In fact, after bone marrow transplantation, the patient will have the donor's blood type. People suffering from autoimmune disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia, are prevented from donating marrow or blood-forming cells.
