Pattern recognition is the process of raw measurement of data by a computer to come up with a prediction, which can then be used to formulate a decision or action to take. Pattern recognition are applied to those problems that are too complex to model explicitly and thereby requiring algorithms to learn parameters in generic models from limited sets of examples. Pattern recognition is focused on real-world, sensor-based applications. It is of significant importance in the process of scientific discovery, because it enables researchers to derive regularities in large amounts of data in areas as diverse as physics, biology, geology, psychology and neuroscience. Pattern recognition algorithms can also be applied in industrial and consumer settings, so that machines are allowed to sense the environment and to decide on actions or support human decision making.
