Toothpaste aids in prevention against gingivitis and tooth decay, which leads to more severe dental issues. Toothpaste comes in many flavours and helps to leave your mouth and breath feeling fresh after brushing. It can also masks any scents from strong-flavoured foods like garlic or onions. While each brand has slight variations in their formula, most contain the same basic ingredients: abrasives, colouring agents, detergents, flavouring, fluoride, humectants, thickeners, preservatives, sweeteners, and whiteners. Abrasives are used to remove plaque and tartar, abrasives give toothpaste their cleaning power. Wetting before softens toothbrush bristles and rinses off debris. Wetting after ensures the toothpaste melts into your toothbrush so it doesn’t roll off. Not wetting your toothbrush means there aren’t extra steps between applying toothpaste and brushing.
