Barcode

Presentations | English

Barcodes and the technology behind them have played an extraordinary role in the development of the modern business. A barcode is the small image of lines and spaces that is affixed to retail store items, identification cards, and postal mail to identify a particular product number, person, or location. The concept for the barcode was developed by Norman Joseph Woodland, who drew a series of lines in the sand to represent Morse code, and Bernard Silver. The code uses a sequence of vertical bars and spaces to represent numbers and other symbols. The bars are typically black on white background and their width and quantity vary according to application. The bars are used to represent the binary digits 0 and 1, sequences of which in turn can represent numbers from 0 to 9 and be processed by a digital computer. There are two general types of barcodes: 1-dimensional (1D) and 2-dimensional (2D). Barcodes have an incredibly vital role in enhancing the way corporations capture and transfer data and information, and simultaneously enhance the movement of products through the supply chain.
