The Ayodhya Kand is one of the most important kands in the Ramayan, and it describes the arrangements for Lord Rama's coronation and his 14-year exile into the wilderness to fulfil his father's wish. The kand depicts Rama's tenacity and obedience in refusing to return to Ayodhya without carrying out his father's demands. It depicts a conversation between King Dashratha and his queen Kaikeyi, in which the latter requests two boons. The kand highlights Rama's calm self-control, as he accepted his father's decree with complete obedience for the sake of his honour. It also depicts Sita's sacrifice in remaining at her husband's side during the exile. When the gods saw that the coronation would not suit their purposes (Lord Vishnu had taken on the form of Sri Rama to put an end to Ravana, who was a threat to both humans and gods), they approached Mother Sarasvati to prevent Sri Rama from being installed. Manthara, Kaikeyi's hump-backed maidservant, had his mind and speech organs twisted by Mother Sarasvati. When Kaikeyi learned that Sri Rama would be crowned yuvraja the next day, she was pleased. But as Manthara spoke to her, her perspective began to shift. Manthara convinced her that the inauguration would put her in a lower position than Bharata, and that Bharata would be expelled or killed.
രാമായണത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട കാണ്ഡങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് അയോധ്യാകാണ്ടം. ശ്രീരാമന്റെ പട്ടാഭിഷേകത്തിനായുള്ള ക്രമീകരണങ്ങളും പിതാവിന്റെ ആഗ്രഹം നിറവേറ്റുന്നതിനായി മരുഭൂമിയിലേക്കുള്ള 14 വർഷത്തെ വനവാസവും ഇത് വിവരിക്കുന്നു. പിതാവിന്റെ ആവശ്യങ്ങൾ നിറവേറ്റാതെ അയോധ്യയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങാൻ വിസമ്മതിച്ച രാമന്റെ ദൃഢതയും അനുസരണവും ഈ കാണ്ഡം ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്നു. ദശരഥൻ രാജാവും രാജ്ഞി കൈകേയിയും തമ്മിലുള്ള സംഭാഷണം ഇത് ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതിൽ രണ്ടാമൻ രണ്ട് വരങ്ങൾ അഭ്യർത്ഥിക്കുന്നു. തന്റെ ബഹുമാനാർത്ഥം പൂർണ്ണമായ അനുസരണയോടെ പിതാവിന്റെ കൽപ്പന സ്വീകരിച്ച രാമന്റെ ശാന്തമായ ആത്മനിയന്ത്രണം ഈ കാണ്ടം എടുത്തുകാണിക്കുന്നു. വനവാസകാലത്ത് ഭർത്താവിന്റെ അരികിൽ താമസിച്ച് സീതയുടെ ത്യാഗവും ഇത് ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്നു. പട്ടാഭിഷേകം തങ്ങളുടെ ഉദ്ദേശ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് അനുയോജ്യമല്ലെന്ന് ദേവന്മാർ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ (മനുഷ്യർക്കും ദേവന്മാർക്കും ഒരുപോലെ ഭീഷണിയായ രാവണനെ അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാൻ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ശ്രീരാമന്റെ രൂപം സ്വീകരിച്ചു) ശ്രീരാമനെ തടയാൻ അവർ അമ്മ സരസ്വതിയെ സമീപിച്ചു. കൈകേയിയുടെ ദാസിയായ മന്ഥരയുടെ മനസ്സും സംസാര അവയവങ്ങളും അമ്മ സരസ്വതിയാൽ വളച്ചൊടിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. അടുത്ത ദിവസം ശ്രീരാമന് യുവരാജാവായി കിരീടധാരണം നടത്തുമെന്ന് അറിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ കൈകേയി സന്തോഷിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ മന്ഥര അവളോട് സംസാരിച്ചപ്പോൾ അവളുടെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാട് മാറാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ഭരതനെക്കാൾ താഴ്ന്ന നിലയിലായിരിക്കും ഉദ്ഘാടന ചടങ്ങെന്നും ഭരതനെ പുറത്താക്കുകയോ കൊല്ലുകയോ ചെയ്യുമെന്ന് മന്ഥര അവളെ ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്തി.
