Aquaponics is a food production system that couples aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish, crayfish, snails or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) whereby the nutrient rich aquaculture water is fed to hydroponic grown plant, involving nitrifying bacteria for converting ammonia into nitrates. The term originates from the two words aquaculture and hydroponics. Aquaponic systems come in various sizes from small indoor units to large commercial units. They can be either freshwater systems or contain salt or brackish water. The presentation provides better understanding on the topic.
