"These are organic compounds with wide range of use in industries. Alcohols have an OH group attached to a carbon atom in an aliphatic compound whereas phenol have the same group attached to the carbon atom of a aromatic system. The substitution of hydrogen with oxygen that is by an alkoxy or aryloxy group forms ether. With the number of OH or hydroxyl group attached to alcohols and phenols, they can be classified as mono, di or polyhydric compounds. Ethers are classified as symmetrical or unsymmetrical based alkyl or aryl group attached. Alcohols have high boiling point and more water soluble characteristic than any other organic compound. Phenols are partially soluble while ethers are not soluble. Alcohols are less acidic when compared with phenols and can be oxidised by agents like potassium permanganate.
