HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system of the body. AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) can develop if HIV is not treated. HIV can be transmitted through contact with infected blood, sperm, or vaginal fluids. The majority of people contract HIV through unprotected sex with an HIV-positive individual. Sharing drug needles with someone infected with HIV is another common way to get it. Although HIV/AIDS has no cure, medications can significantly slow its progression.
