Antigone is one of Sophocles' greatest works and one of the most influential plays ever performed. Its central theme of conflict between the individual and authority has reverberated throughout history. Fate versus free will, respect for death, gender roles, and justice are the central themes of Antigone. Fate versus free will: The play encourages the audience to recognise fate's role in achieving divine balance. Respect for death: Death is unavoidable and can even be viewed as a reward, which Antigone receives but Creon does not. Gender roles: Women's powers are shown to be derived from the gods in the same way.
